Maria Pilm is an Estonia-based textile artist whose creative practice has emerged from a lifelong search for identity, belonging, and a personal means of expression.

Her path to textile art has been anything but straightforward. Over the years, she has explored a diverse range of professions and disciplines, including hospitality, Montessori education, school teaching and leadership, translation, fundraising, and travel consultancy. Alongside her professional life, she has continuously immersed herself in visual arts, traditional crafts, languages, and movement.

What may appear as a collection of unrelated experiences is, in fact, an ongoing search for a way of being in the world that feels genuinely her own.

Tapestry has become a particularly meaningful discovery in this journey. Its slow, repetitive, and meditative process offers a counterbalance to her restless mind, creating a sense of stability and continuity. Through weaving, thoughts and emotions that resist verbal expression gradually acquire physical form.

Her artistic practice is rooted in contradictions. Working with a material traditionally associated with comfort, domesticity, and decoration, Pilm creates emotionally charged, often provocative images that explore hidden aggression, vulnerability, social inequality, power, and the complexities of human experience.

Rather than using art to deliver answers or moral lessons, she draws upon personal experiences, observations, and emotional responses to reveal unexpected meanings beneath the surface of everyday life.

Her work continues to explore the expressive possibilities of tapestry, challenging the boundaries between traditional craft, contemporary art, and personal narrative.
